The benefits of cycling to work!

There are a number of reasons why switching out your usual methods of commute and taking to the two wheeled variety of transport is the better choice. Health benefits, financial, environmental are just to name a few, so we’ve rounded up all the reasons why you should take to the cycle lane this week in aid of Cycle to Work Day, this Thursday 4th August!

  1. Financial gain.

Cycling to work can definitely save you some pennies, especially with the current rising prices of petrol across the UK. Even public transport at the moment seems to be ever increasing and so aside from perhaps investing in some high vis gear and a sturdy helmet, you won’t have to spend a fortune just to get to work!

  1. Increase your cardio.

A bit of extra exercise is a great reason for taking on the cycle to work option. A ten minute bike journey can burn around 80 calories, and that is without taking into account speed or any inclines that you might encounter on your way to work.

  1. Reduce your carbon footprint

Considering the average road use of UK car drivers combined with fuel types and adding emissions from production, driving a car emits about 271g CO2 per passenger-kilometre. That number is a crazy amount and can be reduced by over 90% by swapping your car for a bike. Everyone is currently working towards the common goal of net zero, so why not do your part?

  1. Cleaner air and reduced pollution.

Choosing cycling over a car contributes to cleaner, healthier air for yourself and everyone around you. Outdoor pollution in the UK is linked to over 10,000 deaths and so doing your part to reduce harmful and deadly emissions is a worthy reason to get out that bike from the garage!

  1. Mental health benefits.

Mental wellbeing is just as important as physical health. Cutting out lengthy traffic queues, exercising, breathing in the fresh air during your cycle are all contributing factors to an improved mental health and wellbeing.
