Protecting Our Planet With IoT

César Guerrero, director of the eastern division at the Center of Excellence and Adoption on Internet of Things (CEA-IOT), said “Training, raising awareness in society of the importance of sustainability and demystifying the technology are essential to developing IoT projects on sustainability on a large scale”.

So how is IoT already helping to improve sustainability?

The data collected from machines, made possible by IoT, is enabling more careful use of water. Using sensors and a network of communications infrastructure, data is used to make better decisions regarding water irrigation. The system can also be used to prevent leaks in water networks and prevent the pollution of our rivers and oceans.

Energy is also being used more efficiently thanks to IoT. Based on data and algorithms, IoT can be used to change physical environments, practicing load-shedding and demand management. The use of Smart Energy has the capability to reduce the kW price and increase the use of renewable energy sources globally. This has the potential to save over 1.3 trillion MWh of energy from now until 2030.
