CO2 Monitoring - Improving Air Quality Within Our Schools

It’s estimated that 300,000 carbon dioxide monitors will be required by schools in England for the September term to improve ventilation and reduce the number of COVID-19 outbreaks.

Initial research has indicated that monitoring air quality within schools and taking proactive measures to improve internal air quality can be as effective in reducing the aerosol transmission of COVID-19 as vaccinating between 50% and 60% of the population.

The Department of Education state that wireless data loggers are a good option to identify where increased air flow is required. The use of this technology will help to address safety concerns highlighted by numerous teaching unions.

Most COVID safety restrictions have been relaxed in England's schools. Masks, bubble groups and social distancing rules are no longer required for the new term. With CO2 monitors in place, schools can ensure minimal disruption to education.

When implementing air quality improvement strategies, it’s important to consider that each school and the buildings they are housed within, are completely unique.

Improving ventilation by simply opening a window could be a suitable solution in some scenarios. For others, this solution could lead to lead to poor temperature and humidity conditions which can have an impact on the health of pupils.

Monitoring air quality levels will become even more important as we head into winter and keeping doors and windows open is no longer possible.

The use of wireless remote monitoring solutions had been trialled in schools prior to the summer break. The UK Government have now committed to spending £25million on CO2 sensors to monitor air quality within our classrooms.

At Invisible Systems, our wireless monitoring solution is teamed with a user-friendly, real-time data platform. You can see the internal air quality in the classroom in real-time, enabling your team to take action exactly when it’s needed.
